Ligue 1: Ten-man Lille hold Monaco and move top

Ethan Mbappe gives Lille the lead

Lille left the Principality with a point and, for a few hours at least, the top of the table. They drew 1-1 at Monaco on Sunday afternoon in Matchday 8 of Ligue 1, and they did it while a man down for over half an hour.

Davide Ancelotti’s side struck first. On 24 minutes Ethan Mbappe cut inside the box and took Diaoune’s pass first time with his left foot, his first league goal of the season. Monaco had already lost Ansu Fati, who limped off around the quarter-hour mark grabbing the back of his thigh, and Lille looked comfortable.

That changed after the hour. On 66 minutes Tanguy Nianzou went through the back of Brunner with a late, heavy challenge, and referee Francois Letexier sent him off with a straight red.

Diop levels, Ozer keeps Lille alive

Monaco needed eight minutes to cash in. Edan Diop, on since half-time, swung in a cross from the right that Brunner brushed on its way into the net (74th). It was Diop’s second Ligue 1 goal this season.

The hosts kept coming through Golovin, Abline and Vanderson but found nothing more. They finished with 64% possession and six shots on target, against two for Lille. The reason was Berke Ozer. The Lille keeper made five saves, including one to deny a Golovin free kick early in the second half and a late claim from a Vanderson header in stoppage time.

A table with no breathing room

Monaco and Lille both came in on 14 points, level with three other clubs including Lyon, the leaders. The draw lifts Lille to first place while the rest of the round plays out. Lille won on this same pitch last season, 1-0 on Matchday 33. This time Olivier Giroud stayed on the bench for all 90 minutes.
