Ligue 1: Fonseca leaves the door open to a January striker

Two injuries, one real number nine

Paulo Fonseca laughed when a journalist asked him on Sunday whether Endrick could come back to Lyon this winter. Then he got serious about the squad he actually has.

Loïs Openda has a cracked fibula in his right leg and is out until at least the mid-November international break. Pavel Sulc was injured in training this week, a torn meniscus in his right knee, and will miss about four months. Lyon travel to Paris on Monday at 20:30 and also have the Europa League to deal with, so the depth up front is the question.

“Maybe there will be the option”

Fonseca said he had talked with sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean and that the club will see how the Openda and Sulc situations develop. “Maybe there will be the option of signing a striker,” he said, according to RMC Sport.

His own list of true forwards is short. He named Rémi Himbert and Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez, both 18. Himbert was brought back in the 3-0 Europa League defeat at Hoffenheim on Thursday. Gomes Rodriguez has not yet been in a senior matchday group this season.

Khalis Merah, Fonseca said, is not a striker but can play there depending on the opponent and the game. Corentin Tolisso and Noah Nartey can fill in as well. Those are stopgaps, and the coach knows it.
