Rain, then a collapse
Rain washed out the first two sessions of day two in Gqeberha, and Australia made the little cricket left count. South Africa finished on 97-5 after 43 overs in their first innings, with Scott Boland taking 4-31 and Mitchell Starc 1-27.
South Africa resumed on 20-2. Boland removed debutant Marques Ackerman for 6, caught behind. Starc then had Matthew Breetzke caught chasing a wide drive, which left the hosts on 40-4.
Captain Temba Bavuma steadied things with an unbeaten 41, and he and Ryan Rickelton added a fifty for the fifth wicket. Rickelton had been dropped on 26 by Marnus Labuschagne, but Boland ended his stay for 31 when Matt Renshaw held a one-handed catch at slip.

Australia hold the series lead
Australia lead the series 1-0 after winning the first Test by 214 runs. South Africa are the reigning World Test champions, having beaten Australia in the 2025 final, and they now need Bavuma to build on his 41 to avoid falling far behind on first innings.
There was one concern for the tourists. Josh Hazlewood missed the day with illness, though he is expected to be available for the rest of the Test.
Day three begins at 9am local time on Tuesday.
