Golf: Tiger Woods missing from Hero World Challenge field

The host is not on the first list

Tiger Woods is absent from the initial field for the Hero World Challenge, the event he hosts in the Bahamas. The names were released Monday. The tournament runs December 3-6 at Albany, and 17 players have committed to a 20-man field. Woods can still get in through one of three exemption spots.

Woods, 50, has not played an official event since he missed the cut at The Open at Royal Troon in July 2024. He had talked about playing the 2026 Masters before his arrest on March 27 following a crash on Jupiter Island, Florida. Last month he accepted a five-year suspension of his driver’s licence under a deal with prosecutors in the impaired-driving case. No date for a return to competition has been confirmed.

Recent signs have pointed to a slow comeback. Woods has been back on the range and appeared in a video that showed confidence in his game ahead of the Nexus Cup.

Scheffler and Matsuyama lead the list

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the committed names. He won at Albany in 2023 and 2024 and is chasing a third title. Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama is in the field too.

Seven of the world’s top 10 will tee it up. Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Russell Henley, Chris Gotterup, Sam Burns and Xander Schauffele join Scheffler. The three remaining spots will be announced later, and that is where Woods’ name could still appear.
