NFL: Broncos edge Seahawks 17-14 on OT field goal

McMillian’s pick flips overtime

Denver beat the defending Super Bowl champions 17-14 on Thursday night, and it took an interception in overtime to settle it. Ja’Quan McMillian jumped a Sam Darnold throw at the Seattle 43-yard line. A few plays later Wil Lutz booted a 53-yard field goal with 4:53 left in the extra period.

The Broncos were far from smooth. Bo Nix finished 17 of 27 for just 107 yards, and the whole offense managed 168 yards. Denver punted on all six second-half possessions, not counting a one-play kneel-down. J.K. Dobbins led the team with 41 rushing yards on 17 carries, and he also scored from 4 yards out in the second quarter. RJ Harvey added the other first-half touchdown from a yard out, finishing a 79-yard, nine-play drive.

Seattle let this one slip

Darnold threw for 278 yards on 27 of 51 passing but never found the end zone and gave the ball away twice. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards. Emanuel Wilson added 52 yards on 14 carries.

The Seahawks had their chances. They reached the Denver 24 on their first drive of the second half, only for Darnold to be sacked and Jason Myers to hit the right upright on a 47-yard try. Seattle had opened the scoring on a 55-yard Myers field goal, and George Holani’s 1-yard run followed by a Darnold two-point pass to Rashid Shaheed cut the deficit to 14-11 in the fourth. Kris Abrams-Draine then picked Darnold off at the Denver 31 with 1:25 to play, but the Broncos went three-and-out. Shaheed returned the punt 31 yards to the Seattle 46, and Myers tied it from 34 yards with three seconds left.

What it does to the standings

Denver moves to 4-2. Seattle drops to 3-3 with its second straight loss, and the Seahawks have now matched their entire loss total from all of last season.
