Football: Boston Legacy lose keeper Casey Murphy for season

A season-ending injury with three games left

Boston Legacy goalkeeper Casey Murphy is out for the rest of the NWSL season with a right knee injury, the club announced Tuesday. She partially tore her posterior cruciate ligament in a 4-2 win over the Portland Thorns on Oct. 3 and will move to the season-ending injury/illness list.

The timeline is the encouraging part. Boston expects her to recover fully in time for next season.

What Boston loses

Murphy, 30, joined this year and started 25 matches in her first season with the club, keeping four clean sheets. Boston sits 13th of 15 teams at 8-14-5 with 29 points.

The résumé behind those numbers is heavier than the table. She has 20 caps for the U.S. women’s national team and won Olympic gold at Paris 2024, so the Legacy are losing an experienced starter for the final stretch.

Three matches to play

Boston has three regular-season matches left and now has to finish them without its first-choice goalkeeper. The club’s focus shifts to next season, when it expects to have her back.
