Tennis: Bergs ends Alcaraz’s run in Shanghai

Alcaraz falls in the third round

The streak stops at eleven. Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out on Monday in the third round of the Shanghai Masters 1000 by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, ranked 39th, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4). The world No. 3, who had not lost since returning from injury, sees his Chinese run end far sooner than expected.

The match lasted a little over two hours. Bergs took the first set by a whisker, then held his level in a tight second set that went to a tie-break, which he won 7-4.

Eleven straight wins, then the Belgian wall

The 23-year-old Spaniard came in on eleven consecutive wins since coming back from injury, including the Tokyo title won in the final on 6 October. This defeat is therefore his first setback since his return.

For Bergs, 27, it is the biggest result of his career. The Belgian beats a top-three player and books a place in the next round in Shanghai.
