NFL: Bucs stun Cowboys as Irving runs for 165

Irving runs Tampa Bay to a first win

Nobody gave Tampa Bay a chance in Dallas. The Buccaneers arrived on Thursday night winless and 9.5-point underdogs, with undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels making only his second career start at quarterback. They left with a 24-16 win and their first victory of the season.

Bucky Irving did the heavy lifting. He ran for 165 yards, a career high, and scored twice, the first on a 15-play opening drive that told Dallas what kind of night it would be. Tampa Bay piled up 241 rushing yards on 39 carries and found the end zone twice on the ground.

Daniels kept it simple and kept it clean. He completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown, and Emeka Egbuka added a score early in the third quarter.

Dallas gave it away

The Cowboys led 10-7 at halftime even though they were outgained 154 yards to 146. Javonte Williams scored the first touchdown of the game and Brandon Aubrey kicked a 41-yard field goal before the break. That was about the last good news.

Dak Prescott finished with a 52.2 percent completion rate and two interceptions, and the Buccaneers also recovered a fumble on a kickoff. George Pickens hauled in an acrobatic touchdown from Prescott in the fourth quarter, but Dallas missed the two-point try after it.

What it changes

Tampa Bay moves to 1-4. Dallas drops to 2-3 after losing at home to a team that had not won all year. The swing came late in the third quarter, when coach Todd Bowles went for it on fourth-and-goal and the Buccaneers converted to protect their lead.
