WTA Indian Wells: Rybakina and Svitolina into quarters after two retirements — Pegula and Swiatek up next

In the Californian desert some wins leave a nasty aftertaste. Same script for Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina at Indian Wells: both eased into the quarter-finals when their opponents, Sonay Kartal and Katerina Siniakova, were forced to retire.

Different paths, same result — two top seeds still standing at one of the season’s biggest events. And now two massive matchups are taking shape.

Rybakina steady as Kartal pulls out

Elena Rybakina has been moving through this draw in a low-key, efficient way. After a scrappy opener against Hailey Baptiste she’s finally found her zip out here.

Facing Sonay Kartal in the last 16, the world No.3 met a player brimming with belief. The Brit had ripped off impressive wins over Emma Navarro and Madison Keys, but the run had clearly taken a toll.

On court, Rybakina set the pace early. A sharp serve, heavy groundstrokes, the 2022 Wimbledon champion grabbed control from the off. Kartal tried to hang on, but fatigue and nagging pain caught up.

Down 6-4, 4-3 in the second, Kartal conceded. A miserable ending for her, a tidy win for Rybakina, who marches into the quarters.

Svitolina keeps racking up wins

Earlier, Elina Svitolina saw a similar script, but her match with Katerina Siniakova turned one-sided fast.

Siniakova arrived with heavy mileage — three tight singles, doubles duties on top — and her body was flagging.

Svitolina didn’t hang about. The Ukrainian played clean, aggressive tennis and wrapped the first set in under 25 minutes with a punishing 6-1 that killed any momentum.

Siniakova, clutching her right hip, took a medical timeout and tried to continue, but after a few games in the second the decision was obvious: she couldn’t go on. Final score 6-1, 1-1 retired.

For Svitolina it’s a berth in the last eight and a stat that can’t be ignored: 18 wins this season — the best run on tour in 2026.

Pegula and Swiatek next — the level’s about to spike

Things get a lot tougher now.

Rybakina draws Jessica Pegula for a spot in the semis. Expect a heavy hitting baseline battle — both can crank the pace and muscle you off the court. On Indian Wells hard courts, every rally could turn into a war of attrition.

Svitolina, meanwhile, faces one of the biggest challenges left in the draw: Iga Swiatek. The Pole leads their head-to-head 4-1 and has been brutally effective on hard courts in recent seasons.

But Svitolina arrives with confidence and match rhythm, and with this draw being as unpredictable as ever, one thing’s clear: the quarter-finals should be fireworks.
