Winnipeg Jets – Tampa Bay Lightning: Two battered teams clash in Manitoba
Tampa Bay’s defense is struggling and they turn up to face a Winnipeg side that seems allergic to 60 minutes — this one should be spicy. The Lightning haven’t won in Winnipeg since 2020, dropping their last four visits there.
Can Jon Cooper finally snap that streak? We pick the bones out of both teams and then throw down our pick for this NHL showdown.
Winnipeg: overtime kings
Since the restart one thing’s obvious: Winnipeg rarely finishes in regulation. Their last four games all went to overtime. They’ve nicked points each time — wins over Vancouver (3-2 OT) and Chicago (3-2 OT), and razor-thin OT losses to Anaheim (5-4 OT) and San Jose (2-1 OT). Scott Arniel’s men cling to 12th in the West, nine points off the playoff cut.
At Canada Life Centre it’s been a slog. No 60-minute wins in their last four home games and an offense that’s coughing up just 1.3 goals per game.
The injury list reads like a field hospital: Morrissey, Pionk and Miller missing on the back end, plus Niederreiter and Namestnikov up front. The one bright spot — most should be back before the regular season ends.
Tampa Bay leaking like a sieve
Over in Tampa it’s frowns all round. The Lightning have lost three straight in regulation: Carolina (5-4), Buffalo (6-2) and Minnesota (5-1). It’s the first time this season they’ve conceded five or more goals in three consecutive games. They sit two points off first in the East, but the trend is worrying.
On the road the defense has blown up — 18 goals conceded on this little trip. Their away goals-against average has climbed to 2.57. Thank heavens their attack is still the conference best (111 goals, 3.7 per game) or this would look worse.
Cooper shook things up: Nikita Kucherov dropped to the second line, Conor Geekie and Scott Sabourin recalled to the roster. Nick Paul, Gage Goncalves and Dominic James should return in about ten days. Still, heading to Winnipeg while confidence is shaky is a bad plan — Tampa have let in at least four goals in each of their last four trips there.
NHL Prediction Winnipeg Jets vs Tampa Bay Lightning
Over 5 goals in the game
The last time Tampa shipped this many goals in a run (three straight games conceding 5+) was October 2024. Their defense is in tatters, but with that firepower up front the matches open up quickly. Case in point: the 5.5 line has been cleared in seven straight games!
On top of that, meetings in Winnipeg have been thrillers. The last six clashes on Jets ice have produced at least six goals. Even with Winnipeg’s attack a touch sluggish lately, Tampa’s defensive blackouts should juice this one. We’re backing a high-scoring night — no hesitation.

First, a word on our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We give an opinion — a snapshot of the moment — never a guarantee. Sport is unpredictable. A red card, an injury or a freak goal and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be blunt: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it rarely is. Yes, you can lose. And you will, at some point.
- Be sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — that rarely ends well.
- Betting should stay a hobby, not a job or a source of income. If it’s taking over your life, making you stressed or angry, step away. If needed, talk to a specialist organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- At the end of the day, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and it won’t vanish, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with your local laws. Gambling can spiral (money loss, family tension, addiction). Need help? Players Info Service: 09 74 75 13 13 (non-premium rate) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No liability on our part
Our picks aren’t a contract. They carry no legal weight. In short: you can’t rely on them to claim anything if a bet fails.
Information can change
A prediction is based on what we know when we write it. Lineups shift, a player gets hurt, the weather turns — analysis can become out of date fast. We can’t be held responsible for that.
