A country of half a million produces a Yashin Trophy nominee
Cape Verde has just over 500,000 inhabitants. Fewer than the city of Lyon. One of its goalkeepers is now on the shortlist for the Yashin Trophy, the prize given to the best keeper on the planet.
Vozinha is the name, and nobody outside the archipelago had it pencilled in. It is the first nomination of its kind for Cape Verdean football.
His reaction, posted today, is not the sort of thing a press officer writes.
“There are moments that feel too big to be real… until the day you realise every step of the journey was worth it.”

The summer that changed everything
The shortlist did not appear from nowhere. It traces straight back to the summer of 2026 and Cape Verde’s World Cup campaign, where the keeper produced save after save against squads assembled for many times the money.
Vozinha has not forgotten the route.
“I remember where I come from, everything I’ve lived through, the sacrifices, the hard times and everyone who walked beside me.”
He keeps saying “we”
Read his message again and the pronoun barely changes.
“This nomination isn’t just mine. I carry São Vicente, Cape Verde and an entire people who never stopped believing.”
São Vicente is his island. Where it started. He signs off by thanking God, his family, his team-mates and everyone who pushed him along the way.
“Always keeping my feet on the ground and my heart in my homeland. Thank you, Cape Verde.”
