Transfer: Mohamed Salah announces exit from Liverpool as MLS circles

The end of an era at Anfield

Mohamed Salah has made it official. The Egyptian forward will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season. The club confirmed the news in a statement published Tuesday night. He’s closing the book on a nine-year, headline-making chapter. Salah asked for the early announcement himself — he wanted to be completely upfront with the fans. Where he goes next? Nobody knows. His agent says no decision has been taken yet. The North American league is already publicly staking its claim.

MLS turns up the pressure

Don Garber put it bluntly. The MLS commissioner used an economic summit in Atlanta to make a very public pitch for the Egyptian winger. He says the league has the financial clout and the setup to sell Salah on a move. Garber even suggested Salah speak to the league’s current stars — go ask Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller, he said — pointing to how well those names have settled and performed. The American league hasn’t changed its approach: it’s still after big European names. Orlando only just sealed Antoine Griezmann this week.
