The worse defenses NBA, NFL, NHL – Defensive Matchup – Free version

notesUnderstanding the Defensive Matchups Tool (NBA / NFL / NHL / other US leagues)

This tool is designed to identify the weakest defenses across major US leagues (NFL, NHL, etc.), both overall and in very specific contexts: by position, at home, on the road, over a given period, and more.

In the NFL and NHL, there are 32 teams. But there are 30 in the NBA!
So, the defense ranked 32nd is the worst defense in the league for the metric being analyzed (points, yards, shots, goals, etc.). In the NBA, the worst defense is logically #30!
Conversely, the defense ranked 1st is the stingiest.

In practical terms, this tool answers the question:
“Is my player facing a leaky defense or a brick wall?”
The worse the defense is on the selected metric, the more the matchup is favorable for overs (fantasy & sports betting).

How to use the table?

  • Choose the sport / league: use the buttons above the table to switch between NBA, NFL, NHL (and other leagues). Stats update automatically.
  • Overall or specific view: analyze defenses broadly or filter by position: QB/WR/RB/TE in the NFL, forward lines in the NHL, etc.
  • Home / away: identify teams that are significantly weaker in a specific context.
  • Time period: filter by recent games, the full season, or a custom range to spot recent trends (injuries, coaching changes, fatigue…).
  • Reading the ranking: a rank close to 32 = a defense to target for overs.
    A rank close to 1 = elite defense, a spot to avoid.

Practical applications:

  • Fantasy: start players against the most permissive defenses.
  • Player props betting: a player facing a “saloon door” defense is a positive signal for overs.
  • Avoid bad spots: don’t overrate a player against an elite defense.

The goal: turn complex data into simple decisions to maximize your chances of success.

How to interpret the results?

Once the filters are applied, the table displays a ranking from 1 to 32 (or more depending on the league).
The higher the rank, the weaker the defense statistically.

  • A defense ranked 30–32 against WRs in the NFL = a goldmine for targeting overs.
  • A team ranked 31–32 in goals allowed in the NHL = a favorable spot for opposing forwards.
  • A rank of 1–3 = tough matchups → proceed with caution, more conducive to unders.

What about unders?

This page highlights matchups favorable for overs against porous defenses.
For the opposite angle, a sister page dedicated to unders is available, focused on:

  • the strongest defenses in the league;
  • situations where offenses run into a wall;
  • spots where a player is likely to underperform their line.

By combining both tools (overs + unders), you get a complete view of
defensive strengths and weaknesses, ideal for refining your bets and your fantasy picks.
