Tennis – Arm pain: Coco Gauff forced to retire at Indian Wells

Coco Gauff forced to retire at Indian Wells

The match stopped abruptly for Coco Gauff on Sunday at Indian Wells. Up against Filipino Alex Eala in the third round, the American was forced to retire while trailing 6-2, 2-0.

The world No. 4 was fighting a persistent pain in her left arm — bad enough to end the match.

Before the final game, Gauff called for the physio and took a medical timeout. It didn’t help.

As she left the court she apologised to her opponent at the net. “Sorry. You were playing really well,” she said before walking off.

At just 21, Gauff hardly ever retires mid-match. Since turning pro she’d only done it once before — Cincinnati, 2022.

Sudden pain in her left arm

After the match Gauff tried to explain what she felt on court.

The pain hit suddenly in her left arm. Intense. Hard to put into words.

She said it felt like a jolt inside the arm — like something exploded and then the whole limb went on fire.

It was a completely new sensation for her and it scared her at the time.

Early discussions with the medical team point to a possible nerve issue. Further tests will try to make sense of it.

Eala moves into the last 16

That hands Alex Eala a place in the last 16. The 20-year-old keeps moving through the Californian event.

The Filipino has turned heads lately by beating several big names, earning herself huge popularity back home.

She will meet Czech Linda Noskova in the next round.

Eala admitted wins like this feel strange — you never really savour a victory when your opponent retires.

Still, she prefers to take comfort from how she played and hopes to ride the momentum deeper into Indian Wells.
