Qarabag – Newcastle: perilous trip for the Magpies?
Both clubs at this level for the first time. Qarabag host Newcastle on Wednesday at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium for a first leg that’s part discovery, part ambition.
The Azerbaijanis are on a historic run. The English want a tidy result to take back to St James’ Park. Different routes, same aim: leave nothing to regret.
Qarabag: history in the making
Few backed them to get this far before the competition started. Yet here they are. Qarabag have blown past expectations.
That stunning 3-2 win over Benfica lit the fuse. Copenhagen and Frankfurt followed. Even the heavy loss to Liverpool on the final day doesn’t take away the headline: they’re the first Azerbaijani club to reach this stage.
At home they play with freedom. They’ve hit two or more goals in several European nights in Baku — drew with Chelsea (2-2), beat Frankfurt (3-2), saw off Copenhagen (2-0). The crowd pushes, the tempo is high, and Qarabag go at teams.
One sore point: their record versus English sides. Seven defeats in eight meetings. Still, the last home match against a Premier League club ended in a stubborn draw — something to build on.
Newcastle: caution and appetite
The Magpies know this won’t be a walk. Their away form in Europe this season has been uneven.
After a big win over Union SG, they’ve stumbled on the road: a loss in Marseille, draws at Leverkusen and in Paris. That point in Paris mattered — it showed this side can turn up on the big nights.
At home in England the picture is brighter. Wins at Tottenham and Aston Villa — two controlled away results, controversial at times, but confidence-boosting.
The task is simple: fix a brittle defence. No clean sheets in their last seven matches across all competitions. Against a Qarabag side that attacks without fear, defensive steel will be vital.
Probable lineups
Qarabag:
Kochalski ; Silva, Mustafazada, Medina, Cafarquliyev ; Bicalho, Jankovic ; Andrade, Montiel, Zoubir ; Duran
Newcastle:
Pope ; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall ; Ramsey, Tonali ; Elanga, Willock, Gordon ; Woltemade
Football Prediction Qarabag vs Newcastle
Both teams to score
Qarabag score regularly at home and play with no fear. Newcastle do concede, but they have the attacking quality to reply.
A first leg could open spaces. A lively match with goals at both ends looks a credible outcome.
A quick word on our tips
- What we publish on Mathodds is analysis and opinion, nothing guaranteed. Sport is unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a bizarre goal — and the whole script can flip.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it isn’t. Yes, you can lose. It’s inevitable at some point.
- Be sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — it usually ends badly.
- Betting should stay a pastime, not a job or a source of income. If it’s taking over, making you anxious or putting pressure on you, take a break. If needed, contact a specialised support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and won’t disappear, even with the best analysis.
- Important reminder: betting is prohibited for minors and must follow the law where you live. Gambling can spiral (financial losses, family tensions, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

Your role
Before betting, check that gambling is legal where you live. If it isn’t, that’s on you, not us.
