Big payday for Trent McDuffie as he lands in L.A.
The cornerback market just jumped again. Fresh to Los Angeles, Trent McDuffie looks set to sign a headline-grabbing extension. The trade with the Kansas City Chiefs still needs the league’s formal stamp, but the payday is essentially done. Early word is a four-year addition worth 124 million dollars. With 100 million fully guaranteed, this will make him the highest-paid coverage specialist in league history.
The deal locks him to his new team through 2030. Before the extension kicks in, he’ll still pocket 13,6 million dollars in 2026 as he burns the final year of his rookie contract. The Rams had the cap room to swallow a salary this big after they slashed spending on the defense last season. This is their approach — spend now, pay later. The previous mark at the position was set by Jalen Ramsey when he re-upped in California in 2020.
A ruthless defensive reset
They had to fix things. The defense folded at the end of the regular season and again in the playoffs, and it likely cost them a shot at the Super Bowl. To bring in someone who can calm that secondary, Los Angeles handed Kansas City a stack of picks: the 29th pick of the upcoming first round, fifth- and sixth-rounders, plus a third-rounder next year. The Rams still keep the 13th overall pick they picked up from Atlanta.
The profile fits the price tag. Terrifying in coverage and one of the most physical corners in the league, he’s a disruptor. Over four seasons he’s racked up 34 QB pressures and eight forced fumbles — numbers that put him among the position’s elite. He also owns three interceptions and 5.5 sacks. His presence will change how the defense is schemed and take pressure off players like Quentin Lake, who was forced into a brutal hybrid role last year.
It gets juicier because he’s a local. He grew up in the Los Angeles suburbs, starred at St. John Bosco High, then at the University of Washington. He thrived under Jimmy Lake there — the same Jimmy Lake now coaching the Rams’ defensive backs. He’ll return to familiar surroundings while wearing the label of the league’s priciest defender.
