A third stint in New York
Demario Davis is returning to where it started. The 37-year-old linebacker has signed with the New York Jets on a two-year, $22 million deal. He knows the facility inside out — the Jets picked him in the third round of the 2012 draft and he spent his first four pro seasons there before testing free agency. After that his career bounced around. Davis signed with Cleveland in 2016 and the Browns shipped him back to New York in a trade a year later. He eventually settled in New Orleans — eight seasons with the Saints and two Pro Bowl nods.
Defense on a rescue mission
This signing answers an emergency. New York’s defense collapsed last season. The numbers were ugly: no pressure on quarterbacks, missed tackles everywhere and zero interceptions. The front office identified a leadership void in the locker room. Coach Aaron Glenn starts year two and needs deputies on the field. Adding veteran grit became the offseason priority. The team didn’t hold back — they engineered a trade for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (29). Defensive tackle David Onyemata (33) came in via free agency. The rotation has also been bulked up with Joseph Ossai, Nahshon Wright, Dane Belton, Kingsley Enagbare and T’Vondre Sweat.
Expectations have been raised
Davis explained his choice on the team’s official channels Thursday. He said he felt his job was left unfinished after his last exit and that he’s tackling this chapter with a different kind of determination. He owns his veteran tag. He insists he’s still playing at an elite level and wants to stamp his work ethic on the locker room. His role will be to mentor the young talent added to the roster. Local fans want instant results. Davis refused to sell pipe dreams — he vowed to embody New York’s standard on the field and told his teammates to get to work immediately.
