Newcastle – Manchester United: Red Devils desperate to lock down third 
On Wednesday night Manchester United head to the boiling pot of St James’ Park with one aim: shore up third. Newcastle, meanwhile, are in freefall — five defeats in six league games. They need to stop the rot, and fast.
The Carrick effect is firing on all cylinders 
Since 17 January United have been almost flawless: 19 points from 21. Michael Carrick is quietly putting down a claim for the job full-time. Four of his six wins have been by the skinniest of margins, yes, but you can see a tight, grown-up group that knows how to grind results out.
The perfect example was Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. United were behind at half-time, then flipped the script — helped, it must be said, by a sending-off. Bruno Fernandes is still pulling the strings (7 goals and 13 assists this season), and up front Benjamin Sesko has been unstoppable (7 goals in his last 8 matches in all competitions).
Their overall away record only ranks sixth, yet United have gone five away games without defeat (two wins, three draws). Big worrying stat for Carrick before this one: United haven’t won at St James’ Park since October 2020 and have lost their last three visits there.
Everything’s gone wrong for the Magpies 
At home Newcastle are no longer a fortress. Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Everton underlined the problem. Rare under Eddie Howe: three straight home league defeats, and eight goals shipped across those games (Aston Villa, Brentford and Everton).
The slide shows in the table. Now 13th, the black-and-whites sit seven points off 7th (Brentford) with only ten games to go. The buzz around a Champions League clash with Barcelona keeps fans talking, but Howe knows his job will be under intense pressure if Europe is missed.
They can point to four wins in six, sure. But scratch a little and two of those came against modest Qarabag, the other wins were over a dismal Tottenham and an Aston Villa side that spent a whole half down to ten men.
