New York Rangers – Montreal Canadiens: a trap on paper?
A strange one on the card. On one side, the home team has already got nothing riding on the table and suddenly looks like it’s found a pair of wings. On the other, the visitors are on a serious mission, mixing it with the heavyweights of the league.
Will the Habs keep rolling, or will New York find another way to be a nuisance? Time to take this one apart and ignore the shiny surface.
The Rangers’ last stand
Sitting deep in the Eastern Conference basement with 69 points, 211 goals scored and 232 shipped, the Americans have been done for a while. And yet the corpse has twitched. After a brutal six-game dry spell, they’ve suddenly strung together three straight wins against New Jersey (4-1), Florida (3-1) and Chicago (6-1).
This bunch has found an unexpected bite in front of goal and, for once, is cashing in on its chances. But the back line is still Swiss cheese. Even when they lose, like in the 4-3 defeat to Toronto, they can play some decent hockey but fall apart the second they’re asked to protect a lead. All gas, no brakes. It’s costing them, usually in their own end.
Montreal Canadiens have locked things down
In Quebec, they’re operating at a different level. Fourth in the East with 94 points, 258 goals scored and 233 allowed, the Canadiens are miles ahead right now. Their current form is terrifying: six wins on the spin.
The real masterpiece is at the back. Montreal haven’t allowed more than one goal in any of their last four games. A wall. It’s shut down teams like Tampa Bay (4-1), Carolina (3-1) and Columbus (2-1) and sent them home annoyed. Most of those wins were wrapped up well before the final buzzer, proof of how completely they’re controlling games.
NHL Prediction New York Rangers vs Montreal Canadiens
Montreal Canadiens to win
Don’t get blinded by New York’s recent little buzz. Yes, three wins in a row looks nice enough, but the opposition has mostly been flat on its face, apart from maybe that brief spark against the Devils. It doesn’t prove much.
Across the ice, it’s concrete. Montreal keep stacking up wins without flinching — six straight in regulation — and they travel like a side that knows exactly what it’s doing, with five wins from their last six away trips. Between an inconsistent team playing for pride and a road side that defends like mad and wants it more, the footballing logic — sorry, the sporting logic — points one way. Backing Montreal on the moneyline is the clearest, cleanest and safest call of the night.

First, a word on our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We’re giving an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is sport: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal from nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live. And above all, don’t chase losses — that usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking over your day, rattling you, or putting you under pressure, step away. And if you need to, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what they’re there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never disappears, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast — money troubles, family tension, addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our picks are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. Plain and simple: you can’t use them to claim anything if a bet doesn’t land.
Information changes
A pick is always based on what we know when it’s written. But after that, line-ups change, players get hurt, the weather turns… and the analysis can be out of date fast. We can’t be held responsible for that.
Your role
