New York Rangers – Calgary Flames: two floundering teams collide at Madison Square Garden
Tonight at Madison Square Garden we get a scrap between two clubs with nothing much left to play for. The Rangers are 20 points adrift of a top‑8 spot in the East, while Calgary are sulking down in the depths of the Western Conference.
Will the Blueshirts use home ice to finally snap their ugly run, or will the Flames turn up and make life difficult in New York again?
The Rangers’ defence is a sieve
This has been a proper mess for New York Rangers. Sitting 16th — bottom — in the Eastern Conference with just 58 points (after 63 games), they’re living through one of their worst campaigns in recent memory. The problem’s at the back: the defence leaks goals. They’re letting in over three a night on average (200 conceded already).
Offence can flash — we saw that in a smashing 6-2 win over Toronto. But habits die hard. Defensive soft spots always kill any momentum, as the 5-4 flop at Columbus and the 6-3 reverse to New Jersey proved.
Calgary: the attack has run dry
The Flames aren’t faring much better. 15th in the West with 57 points, they’ve got a poor differential — 158 for, 196 against. Their big issue? The offence has gone missing. They barely manage more than 2.5 goals per game. You don’t do much in this league without scoring punch.
Form is ugly: four losses in five, including heavy beatings by Washington (7-3) and Ottawa (4-1). Still, they’ve got some pride. They just scalped Carolina — the East leaders — in a wild 5-4 win. Proof they can sting if you take them lightly.

NHL tip New York Rangers vs Calgary Flames
Under 5 goals in the match
You’ve got two demotivated teams playing out the string. Don’t expect fireworks or a scoring fiesta tonight.
Rangers average roughly 3 goals at home. Calgary struggle to hit 2.2 on the road. And head-to-head lately? Tight. Only one of their last five meetings has gone over five goals. When these two meet they tend to slow right down and play on a half-pace. Backing Under 5.5 looks the safest, most logical call for what promises to be a dull one.

First, a word on our tips
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a snapshot of the moment, not a promise. Sport is unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a random goal… the script flips in an instant.
- Let’s be honest: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it isn’t. Yes — that means you can lose. It’s inevitable sooner or later.
- Keep it sensible. Bet small, set a limit and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And for the love of God, don’t chase losses — that rarely ends well.
- Betting should be entertainment, not a job or a revenue stream. If it’s taking over your life, making you anxious or angry, step away. If needed, contact a specialist service. That’s what they’re for.
- Ultimately, you’re responsible. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and it won’t vanish, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with your local laws. Gambling can spiral (losses, family tensions, addiction). Need help? Players Info Service: 09 74 75 13 13 (non-premium rate) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
