Losses to the Mavericks (97-114) and the Kings (101-112) don’t just sting, they ring alarm bells. The Knicks can’t score: under 110 in six of those nine defeats. Over the last 11 games New York sits 28th in offense, a long way from their season average of roughly 118 points per game (9th in the league).
This matchup against Brooklyn is a perfect chance to hit reset. No injuries listed and they’re back at Madison Square Garden, where they’ve been solid all season with 16 wins in 22 games. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns will have to drag the offense out of this slump — easier said than done against a Nets defense that can be stingy.

After a respectable start, the Nets are sliding out of the East Play-In picture — maybe by choice. Seven losses in eight games and Jordi Fernandez’s team look closer to 15th than 10th. The defense’s been respectable for a low-ranked side (114.3 points allowed per game — 10th in the league), but the offense is awful: just 109.0 points per game. In today’s high-scoring NBA that makes wins hard to come by.
Against the Knicks you’d expect the Nets to be fired up, especially after a rest day following the loss to the Suns (117-126). Michael Porter Jr. and Cam Thomas are the offensive sparks — either can go off in a flash, especially if New York keeps giving up easy looks.
