NBA: Jazz stun still-shorthanded Warriors

In a messy season for the Jazz, some nights feel like a breath of fresh air. Monday in Salt Lake City was one of those nights. A tight, unexpected win, ripped out in the final seconds against the Golden State Warriors, 119-116.

A chaotic, nervy game decided by a Blake Hinson three with under thirty seconds to play. A shot from nowhere. And maybe a little light for a team that’s been scraping for it lately. For the Warriors, though, it’s another kick in the teeth — even without their leaders — as they slip to 9th in the West, hovering near 10th.

A shorthanded but scrappy bunch

Utah showed up with few guarantees. Eight losses in their last nine, a pile of absences, a roster shuffled. Still, on the floor the Jazz looked loose. Brice Sensabaugh led the way with 21 points, Kyle Filipowski delivered a full game with 19 and 15 rebounds. Keyonte George added 15 before leaving in the fourth, knocked back by a virus.

But it was the least likely guys who made the difference.

Blake Hinson, on a two-way deal, drained four threes. The last one will stick in people’s heads. Posted on the right wing, he let fly with 29,9 seconds left to give Utah the lead nobody saw coming.

A finish on a knife-edge

The game had already turned scrappy long before that. The lead swapped hands all night. Nineteen lead changes overall. The Jazz thought they’d broken it open in the third with a 12-1 run that pushed them to a ten-point cushion, 89-78. Golden State never folded. Case in point: Gary Payton II’s poster dunk over Cody Williams.

With 1 minute 26 to play, Draymond Green tied it at the free-throw line. The building went quiet. Then Hinson struck. Golden State had one more chance. De’Anthony Melton buried a three to pull the Warriors within 117-116. But Elijah Harkless, another two-way player, didn’t flinch at the line and knocked down two clutch free throws to finish it off.

Warriors in deep trouble

For the Warriors, this night confirmed a rough stretch. Missing Stephen Curry and much of their rotation, the California side have lost four of five. Melton finished as the top scorer with 22. Gui Santos added 15, Brandin Podziemski chipped in 14. Podziemski also missed four free throws in the fourth — a tiny detail that cost big in a game this tight and gave the crowd something to feast on.

Seth Curry, back after missing forty games with back issues, contributed 13. Small mercy for an undermanned roster. Tonight the Warriors face a back-to-back against Chicago and they can’t afford a slip if they want to cling to that 9th spot. Porzingis should be available at the Chase Center, and De’Anthony Melton will be playing his first back-to-back of the season.

Jazz catch a breather

For the Jazz, this win doesn’t rewrite the season. It doesn’t suddenly make things easy. The campaign’s still a grind and the absences hurt. Last night in Salt Lake, Utah might not have had every weapon. But they had what mattered. Guts. And a perfect shot at the exact moment it counted.
