LOSC – Aston Villa: Revenge on the cards at Stade Pierre-Mauroy
This Thursday night northern France will roar for a Europa League last-16 first leg that smells like a grudge match. Barely a year after that breathless Conference League quarter-final — a 3-3 over two legs and penalties that went Villa’s way — Lille and Aston Villa meet again with old scores to settle.
LOSC walking a tightrope
Unlike their English opponents, Lille had to get stuck in and survive a playoff to reach the last 16. After a stop-start group phase, Bruno Genesio’s men had to dig deep to overturn Red Star Belgrade.
Sitting sixth in Ligue 1 and still chasing a top-four spot, Lille are on a four-match unbeaten run across all competitions. The irritation: conceding a 93rd-minute equaliser to Lorient (1-1) last weekend. Pierre-Mauroy is still a decent European fortress (3 wins in 5 Europa League games this season, at least two goals in each win), but home form overall has been patchy lately (only two wins in their last eight home league games). Their record against English sides doesn’t inspire much confidence either — just 3 wins in 19 meetings — even if one of those wins came against Aston Villa, bizarrely, in an Intertoto Cup semi-final back in 2002.
Aston Villa struggling but steered by boss Emery
On the English side, Villa avoided the playoffs thanks to a solid showing in the group (tied for 2nd with Lyon). In Europe this side can score — Villa have netted two or more in nine of their last 13 continental outings. Trouble is, back at home the engine has seized up.
Hit by injuries to key players, Villa are gasping in the Premier League. One win in seven domestic games and a heavy 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea have sown doubt, even if they still cling to fourth. But remember: the Europa League is Unai Emery’s stomping ground. The Spaniard wants a fifth trophy in this competition. With 66 wins from 102 Europa matches, he has never been knocked out at the last-16 stage across seven campaigns. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
Probable lineups
LOSC : Ozer ; Santos, Ngoy, Mandi, Perraud ; Bentaleb, Andre, Bouaddi ; Haraldsson, Giroud, Correia
Aston Villa : Martinez ; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen ; Luiz, Onana ; Sancho, Rogers, Buendia ; Watkins
Football Prediction Lille vs Aston Villa
Draw
Lille have already shown they can topple European heavyweights (ask Real Madrid and Atlético last season). Against a Villa side in a slump, the hosts have a chance.
Yet Emery’s pragmatism and tactical savvy in two-legged ties are well known. Even shorn of a few players, Villa have the individual quality to hurt on transitions and walk out of Pierre-Mauroy with a positive result. A tactical draw looks like the most likely outcome, leaving everything to play for in the return in Birmingham.

Before anything: a note on our tips
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We give an opinion, a snapshot of the moment — not a guarantee. Sport stays unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and the script flips.
- Let’s be blunt: no bet is risk-free. Even when it looks obvious, nothing is certain. Yes, that means you can lose. It will happen at some point.
- Be sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And whatever you do, don’t chase losses — that never ends well.
- Betting should be entertainment, not a job or income. If it takes over your life, makes you anxious or stresses you out, step back. If needed, talk to a specialist — that’s what they’re there for.
- In the end the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept that risk exists and won’t disappear, even with the best analysis.
- Essential reminder: betting is banned for minors and must follow your local laws. Gambling can spiral (money loss, family tension, addiction). Need help? Helpline: 09 74 75 13 13 (non-premium) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
