Two goals, and a record moved a little closer
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 140 Champions League goals in 183 appearances. That is the number Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are now measured against, and Opta has run the arithmetic on when either might reach it.
Both scored on Tuesday, on the opening night of the 2026-27 league phase. Mbappé pounced on a Yann Bisseck error to open the scoring in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Inter. Haaland struck twice as Manchester City won 2-0 at Porto. Neither result was a surprise. What the goals did was push both men into the competition’s top seven scorers since the 1992 rebrand.
Mbappé has the goals, Haaland has the rate
Mbappé sits joint fifth on 51 goals, level with Raúl. The gap between them is in the games: 99 for Mbappé, 142 for the Madrid forward who set that mark. At 27, Mbappé averages a goal every 112.4 minutes, the sixth-best rate among the 27 players with at least 30 Champions League goals.
Ronaldo’s rate was 113.9 minutes. The two are almost identical, which tells you where the real problem sits. Mbappé does not need to score faster than Ronaldo did. He needs to play as often, and Ronaldo’s 183 appearances are themselves a competition record. Mbappé needs 84 more.
The expanded format helps. Eight games are guaranteed to any side reaching the league phase, and a finalist can play 17. Real Madrid would have to reach the final and go through the play-off round five seasons running for Mbappé to get there by the 2030-31 final. A seven-year timeline reads as more realistic, which would put him at 34.

The Norwegian is scoring faster than anyone ever has
Haaland is 12 goals behind on 59, but he has reached them in 59 games. A goal every 79.7 minutes is the best rate in the history of the competition, and by some distance. Lionel Messi is the closest anyone has come, at 105.3 minutes.
Haaland needs 82 more matches. At an average of 12 Champions League games a season, roughly what a quarter-final run without the play-off round produces, the model puts him level with Ronaldo 83% of the way through 2033-34, in a round-of-16 second leg.
The obstacle is not the scoring
City have not gone past the quarter-finals since winning the competition in 2022-23, and were eliminated in the play-off round in 2024-25. Twelve games a season is an assumption, not a guarantee, and it is the assumption the whole projection rests on.
Haaland is 26. Mbappé is 27. On these numbers, the race does not resolve until the mid-2030s.
