Frankfurt – Cologne: Frankfurt chasing Europe, Cologne fighting for their lives
This Sunday, the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt is set for a clash with very different stakes. Frankfurt, sitting 7th, are dreaming of a European place, while FC Cologne, down in 15th, are scrambling to stay in the top flight. For Frankfurt, it’s simple: win at home or miss a massive chance. For Cologne, they need to get out of the danger zone fast if they want to avoid the drop and all the misery that comes with it.
Frankfurt, kings of their own ground
Even if Frankfurt swallowed a bitter pill just before the international break with a 2-1 defeat at Mainz, the overall picture still looks strong. Under new boss Albert Riera, the Frankfurt players have turned into real terrors in front of their own fans. They still haven’t conceded at home under the new man.
To close the gap to the top six, Frankfurt have to keep calling the shots. Their attack will be expected to crack the visitors’ defence and strike early. The Eagles will want this game done and dusted from the off, giving Cologne no chance to settle.
Cologne want a shock to the system
This is pure crisis time for Cologne. Winless since January, the club’s chiefs have ripped up the script and put René Wagner in charge. The new coach knows the job is a nasty one. Away from home, Cologne have a rotten habit of leaking chances and gifting far too much to the opposition.
With the pressure cranked right up this Sunday, the Billy Goats will probably have no choice but to sit deep and hang on in their own half. The plan is obvious enough: absorb the pressure, hope the manager bounce kicks in, and maybe nick something on the break. A Cologne win would border on a miracle given their awful away record.
Probable line-ups
Frankfurt : Zetterer ; Amenda, Koch, Theate ; Doan, Gotze, Larsson, Uzun, Brown ; Kalimuendo, Burkardt
Cologne : Schwabe ; Sebulonsen, Van den Berg, Ozkacar, Lund ; Johannesson, Krauss ; Thielmann, Kaminski, El Mala ; Ache
Football prediction Frankfurt vs Cologne
Frankfurt to win
A new coach can sometimes spark a response. This time, though, the task looks far too big for Cologne.
Frankfurt have been rock solid at the Deutsche Bank Park in recent weeks. With a back line that’s been stubborn at home, they’ve got more than enough as a unit to snuff out Cologne’s timid hopes. Expect Frankfurt to boss this, and to do the sensible thing by taking all three points against a Cologne side low on belief and in real trouble.

First, a word on our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is still sport: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the whole story flips.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it really isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, at some point, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t go anywhere near money you need to live. And above all, don’t chase losses — that usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a way to make money. If it starts taking over your day, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist service. That’s what it’s there for.
- In the end, it’s on you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is banned for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast — money problems, family stress, addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our picks are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. Plain and simple: if a bet loses, you can’t come after us for it.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it’s written. But between then and kick-off, a line-up changes, a player gets hurt, the weather turns nasty… and the analysis can be out of date fast. We can’t be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, make sure wagering is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
We can’t say this enough: gamble in moderation. If you’re losing control, don’t hang around for help. We can’t be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
Legal age
