Shock at Old Trafford: Ruben Amorim sacked
It’s a shockwave across English football. After the frustrating 1-1 draw with Leeds and comments that had already raised eyebrows inside the club, Manchester United confirmed Ruben Amorim’s sacking. A heavy call — but one the board says was unavoidable.
The statement that sealed the split
In a sober but blunt statement, the club confirmed the end of the Portuguese boss’s stint.
“Ruben Amorim has left his role as Manchester United’s head coach. The club, currently sixth in the Premier League, has reluctantly decided that it’s time to make a change to maximise the chances of finishing the season as high as possible. Manchester United thanks Ruben for his work and wishes him well for the future.”
Diplomatic phrasing. But it barely hides deep disillusion.
A change that never took hold
Arriving at Old Trafford in November 2024 branded as a modern, ambitious coach, the former Sporting Lisbon boss never managed to stamp his mark. The side, already fragile, didn’t find a clear direction under him. Last season ended in a worrying 15th place, partly rescued by a run to the Europa League final.
Surprisingly, the picture is grim. Since taking charge, Amorim has collected just 58 Premier League points. A meagre total — the fourth-lowest in the English top flight over the period. Far too little for a club that still thinks of itself among the continent’s giants.

A dressing room that lost its bearings
Between demands from the dugout, baffling tactical calls and rollercoaster results, the mood kept getting tenser. The draw with Leeds was the last straw, especially after remarks seen as critical of the board. In Manchester, that sort of outing never goes unnoticed.
Darren Fletcher drafted in as stop-gap
In the rush, Manchester United announced Darren Fletcher will take interim charge. A homegrown solution while they hunt for a longer-term fix. Short-term goal: steady the dressing room and secure a European place.
What’s next?
Manchester United are sixth, still in the hunt, but at a crossroads. Amorim’s sacking proves one thing: patience at Old Trafford has limits. And when results don’t come, even the most attractive projects get swept aside.
A new chapter is already opening. Whether it’s finally the long-awaited revival remains to be seen.
