Detroit Red Wings – Calgary Flames: Detroit can’t afford another slip-up
Both teams roll into this one on eerily similar slides, but the stakes couldn’t be more different. Calgary checked out of the playoff race ages ago. Detroit, meanwhile, is squandering a lead and teetering on the edge of the top eight.
The psychological edge, though, sits squarely with the Michigan club when these two meet. We’ve sliced the numbers and the current trends to hand you our best call for this regular-season clash.
Detroit in freefall
Todd McLellan’s bunch has clearly lost its compass in the East, dropping 5 of their last 6. Last week alone they were put on their backs by the Panthers, the Lightning and the Stars. The payoff for that skid: Detroit slips to 8th and, on lost points, they’re effectively sliding out of the playoff picture.
At Little Caesars Arena the mood is sour. They haven’t won any of their last five at home; their last regulation home win was two months ago. Biggest worry is the leaky defence, shipping 3.25 at home on average (14th in the East). The injury list doesn’t help — the forward lines are torn up (Brandsegg-Nygaard, Rasmussen, Larkin and Copp expected back in about two weeks). Small consolation: veteran David Perron, 37, has returned to Detroit via trade with Ottawa.
Calgary has already waved the white flag
True to their status as this season’s disappointments, the Flames have been losing most games since the break (7 losses in their last 10). Recently Ryan Huska’s men got caught on the road by the Islanders (3-2). Calgary now sits stuck in a grim second-last spot in the West, 12 points off the top eight.
On the road they’re a wreck: 5 defeats in their last 6 away games. With an away points percentage flirting with 33.8%, they’re officially the worst team in the league when they leave town. The main issue? An anemic offence averaging just 2.18 goals a night. Jonathan Huberdeau, Jake Bean and Samuel Honzek are on long-term injury lists, forcing the staff to jury-rig lines. In New York, Hunter Brzustewicz dropped out of the lineup to make room for Pachal’s return and the 20-year-old Zane Parekh.

NHL pick Detroit Red Wings vs Calgary Flames
Detroit Red Wings to win (including overtime and shootouts)
This is the fourth time this season Detroit has hit a three-game losing streak. Last times out they broke that run twice with wins; the only time the skid continued it ended with a respectable shootout loss. These Red Wings tend to snap back when the heat’s on.
Dig into the head-to-head and it reads like a rout: Detroit has won the last 7 meetings with Calgary. With the Flames virtually checked out (5 losses in their last 6) and the Red Wings fighting for playoff life in front of their crowd, the pick is obvious. Back Detroit on the moneyline — overtime and shootouts included — it’s the spot to take tonight.

First, a word on our tips
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a snapshot of the moment, not guarantees. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a fluky goal… and the script flips.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it’s not. Yes, that means you can lose. It will happen at some point.
- Best practice: be sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. Don’t chase losses — it rarely ends well.
- Betting should be a hobby, not a job or a revenue stream. If it’s taking over your life, stressing you out or making you act out, take a break. If you need it, talk to a specialist organization. That’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and won’t vanish, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must follow your country’s laws. Gambling can spiral (financial loss, family tensions, addiction). Need help? Players Info Service: 09 74 75 13 13 (non-premium rate) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
