The Mavericks’ season has been a long scrap. Seven losses in their last ten. They can’t find consistency, as that recent 107-125 loss in Chicago showed — a game full of defensive giveaways.
Anthony Davis’ extended absence with a hand injury messes with the team’s balance. Without their franchise player in the paint, Jason Kidd’s bunch have to patch things up, especially around rim protection — once a strength. Offensively, Dallas remains stuck near the bottom in production.
At the American Airlines Center the Mavericks will try to lean on the crowd’s energy and collective effort to play decent basketball. Young guys like Cooper Flagg, Ryan Nembhard and Max Christie will again have to step up to cover for the lack of proven leaders.
Brooklyn Nets: lean on defence 
Brooklyn keeps flipping between good and bad. One win in five highlights the limits of this young roster. Offense is clearly the Nets’ Achilles heel — dead last in the NBA in points per game.
Defensive intensity, though, stays steady. In Memphis, despite a 98-103 loss, the Nets showed they can stay in it by clogging the paint. The trouble starts when their outside shooting vanishes; endgames become a mess. On the road in Dallas, Brooklyn will have to bank on that defensive discipline and hope the offense wakes up if they want to spring a surprise on the Mavs.
