Rams Park erupts to kick off the round of 16
The Champions League felt like a proper European night again in Istanbul. At a roaring Rams Park, Galatasaray hosted Liverpool in the first leg of this last-16 tie. On paper the Reds were favourites. On the pitch the story flipped fast.
Fueled by a volcanic crowd and an attack-heavy starting XI — Victor Osimhen, Noa Lang and Barış Yılmaz among them — the Istanbul side made it clear they meant to ruffle Liverpool’s feathers.

And they didn’t take long to prove it.
Lemina strikes early and ignites the Turkish night
The game hadn’t even settled when Galatasaray struck. From a perfectly worked corner, Victor Osimhen headed the ball across to the far post. Mario Lemina arrived and smashed it home.
7th minute. 1-0.
WHAT A CROWD. 🤩🇹🇷🌋

In a stadium boiling over, Liverpool found themselves under immediate pressure. The Reds tried to respond but had no punch. Florian Wirtz came closest to equalising but dragged his effort wide from almost an open goal.
One chance that summed up the English attack’s struggles in the first half.
Liverpool’s defence under relentless pressure
More than the score, it was Liverpool’s shaky defence that stole the headlines. Too often disjointed, their back line handed the Turkish attackers space and time.
Victor Osimhen dominated the air. Noa Lang, lively down his flank, sprayed dangerous crosses. And on set pieces the Reds looked uneasy.
It took several sharp saves from Mamadarshvili to stop Galatasaray stretching the lead before the break.
A more proactive Liverpool, but still fragile
After the interval, Arne Slot’s side tried to flip the script. They were harsher in tackles, hung around in the opponent’s half, and finally began to control periods of the game.
But every turnover still invited danger.
Osimhen even thought he’d doubled the lead after another defensive slip, only for VAR to wipe it out for an offside at the start of the move.
Another warning sign for Liverpool.
Too little, too late for the Reds
Substitutions — Andrew Robertson and Jeremie Frimpong — injected some energy. Liverpool carved out a few decent openings, Hugo Ekitike among them, but couldn’t beat Turkish keeper Uğurcan Çakir.
Even Virgil van Dijk’s late set-piece forays failed to break the Istanbul defence.
In the final minutes Ekitike then Cody Gakpo tried their luck, but the finishing touch simply wasn’t there for the English.
Everything to play for ahead of Anfield
Galatasaray walk away 1-0 and take a slim advantage into the return.
In a week Liverpool return to Anfield with a job to do. It’s far from impossible, but they’ll need to tighten up at the back and show a different kind of steel.
At this level of the Champions League, a small mistake costs big. Tuesday night proved that for the Reds.
