The Atlanta Hawks are red-hot; the Mavericks have clearly checked out of this season and look like they’ve already got one eye on vacation. On paper it’s a mismatch. Still, Dallas has a few young scorers who can catch fire and upset a home team that sometimes forgets to defend.
Atlanta Hawks: life’s good
Who’d have thought the Hawks would be this solid? The Georgia outfit (33-31) has adapted and is on a six-game winning streak. And they’re not squeaking by — they’re winning big, averaging a margin of over 20 points during this run. Last Saturday they left Philly looking bruised (125-116) after a barnstorming second half, and that came on the heels of a 135-101 rout of Portland.
Their pace is deadly — second-fastest in the league and 117 points a night — and it’s causing havoc. Against the Sixers it was All-Star Jalen Johnson in boss mode: 35 points on 12/19, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s shot-making (24) and veteran C.J. McCollum’s savvy (17 and 7 dimes) helped seal it. Best bit? The defense has tightened up and now ranks 14th in the NBA, allowing 117.3 points.
Dallas Mavericks: drifting and flatlining
In Texas the tank is out in the open. The Mavericks (21-43) are effectively out of the West race. They’ve lost seven straight and are a woeful 7-24 on the road. Sunday in Toronto they were exposed, hammered 92-122 — their three-point shooting was catastrophic: just 5 makes from 30 attempts.
There are sparks looking ahead. Top draft pick Cooper Flagg showed some muscle against the Raptors with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Daniel Gafford was surgical — 21 points on 10/10 and 11 boards — and Brandon Williams gave energy off the bench (16). But as a unit their defense leaks points (around 118 allowed per game) and five of their last seven losses were by double digits.

It’s hard to see this beaten-up Dallas squad stopping Atlanta’s momentum at home. The Hawks have been winning comfortably; the Mavs keep getting smashed on the road. Backing Atlanta to cover the home spread is the sensible play. Add Dallas’ offensive woes (just 92 points in their last game) and the total line near 241.5 looks inflated. The Under is the smart call — expect a comfortable Hawks win, roughly 128-113.
