Auxerre – Lyon: tense showdown at the bottom
Auxerre are in deep trouble and desperately need to stop a worrying run. On Sunday the Burgundians host OL at the Abbé-Deschamps in a game where every point counts.
Lyon, meanwhile, suffered a gutting last-second defeat to PSG but still have a foot in the race for Europe.
Auxerre : crisis deepens
Auxerre had a fine season on their return to Ligue 1, but it’s a different story this year. The team’s in a downward spiral: seven games without a win and a toothless attack. Just seven goals all season — worse than anyone.
The last outing before the break only made things worse. Against Angers an own goal opened the scoring, then a second strike sealed another defeat. Result: Auxerre sit bottom, three points behind Brest, the first club out of the drop zone.
Still, if there’s somewhere Auxerre can still show fight, it’s at home. Their last win came at the end of September — a tight game decided by Danny Namaso. Pressure will be massive on Sunday. A loss could leave scars.
Lyon : unpredictable but still dangerous
Lyon are hard to pin down. They can rattle off good patches and then disappear. The Rhone club haven’t won since beating Strasbourg at the end of October. Between the league and the Europa League they’re in a tricky spell.
Against Paris they showed character. After going behind they fought back through Moreira and Maitland-Niles. Then a stoppage-time goal ruined it. Despite the loss, Lyon remain within reach of European spots — just three points off the top five.
On the road it’s worse: no wins since September. Offensively, Pavel Sulc keeps delivering. Five goals and an assist in the league — he’s Lyon’s main weapon.
Key points
- Auxerre have gone seven matches without a win.
- The Burgundians have the worst attack in Ligue 1.
- Lyon haven’t won away since the end of September.
- The Gones had dominated Auxerre in their recent meetings.
Prediction AJ Auxerre vs Olympique Lyonnais
Auxerre or draw
Lyon arrive with several absences and shaky form. Auxerre, though, are playing for their lives at home and have little choice: they need a solid performance to keep their heads above water. The Gones possess more individual quality, but their inconsistency leaves the door open.
Expect a tight game; Auxerre could at least nick a point in front of their crowd.
First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We share an opinion, a snapshot read, never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and the script flips.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing really is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s inevitable at some point.
- Best advice: be sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch the money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — it almost never ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it takes over your life, annoys you or puts you under pressure, take a break. If needed, talk to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re for.
- Ultimately, it’s your responsibility. Reading our content means accepting the risk exists and won’t disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is prohibited to minors and must comply with your country’s law. Gambling can quickly spiral (money losses, family tensions, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions don’t form a contract. They have no legal weight. Plain and simple: you can’t rely on them to claim anything if a bet fails.
Info that can change
A prediction is based on what we know when we write it. But team line-ups (like Auxerre’s) change, a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can be out of date fast. We can’t be held responsible for that.
Your role
