Statistical blip corrected as Zverev gets the job done in just over two hours
The Madrid Masters 1000 last-16 schedule is now complete. Alexander Zverev came through against Jakub Mensik. The scoreline read 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3. Time on court was clocked at 150 minutes. The match wrapped up at 1:30am. And with it came a long-overdue fix to a familiar problem. Zverev had failed to get past this round in each of the previous three editions.
Physical check shows Zverev comes through unscathed
Zverev’s body looked fine after the bruising battle with Terence Atmane. That earlier match had left him with some pain issues. This late-night outing, though, threw up no sign of any joint or muscle trouble. He started sharply, breaking straight away to take control for the third seed. He held that lead and took the first set 6-4.
The 20-year-old opponent kept things tight in the second set. The Czech came through the tiebreak to level the match. But Zverev raised the level again in the third. He closed out the win and secured his quarter-final spot. It ended with a clean ace, no return, no fuss.

Quarter-final draw now takes shape
The quarter-final bracket has been updated. Tournament officials have set Zverev up against Flavio Cobolli next. The Italian reached this stage after a positive result against Daniil Medvedev. That one went the distance, with the Russian top seed knocked out in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
