Right knee inflammation
Minnesota have lost their best player. Anthony Edwards has inflammation in his right knee, the team announced Tuesday afternoon. An MRI backed up the clinical diagnosis. He’ll miss at least a week. Medical staff will reassess the joint in seven to 14 days. He was already going to miss Tuesday’s home game vs the Phoenix Suns because of lingering knee pain. The 24-year-old last played on Sunday — 37 minutes against the Thunder, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in that 116-103 loss to Oklahoma City.
Major statistical hit
This is an enormous offensive loss. Edwards sits third in the league scoring charts, putting up a career-high 29.5 points per game. The four-time All-Star fills every box — 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals this season. Coach has started him in all 58 appearances. This kind of physical pause is rare for the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft; Anthony Edwards had played at least 72 games in each previous season.
Tight schedule in the West
The Timberwolves sit sixth in the Western Conference, only two games ahead of Phoenix. They’ll have to navigate a brutal stretch without their leader. Minnesota hosts two games this week — Utah Jazz on Wednesday, Portland Trail Blazers on Friday — then heads to Boston on Sunday for a tough road test. The end of March stays at home: Houston Rockets on March 25, Detroit Pistons on March 28.
