Big blow for the Sixers: Tyrese Maxey sidelined with right pinky sprain

Tyrese Maxey to the infirmary, Sixers holding their breath

The Sixers are without their star guard for at least a few days. On Sunday the team announced Maxey has a sprain to his right pinky. He’ll miss at least the next two games. More tests are due soon so the staff can pin down how long he’ll be out.

The injury happened in the final moments of Saturday’s loss to Atlanta. Sixteen seconds remained when Maxey crashed into teammate Adem Bona diving for a loose ball. He grabbed his right hand and grimaced straight away. After the game, coach Nick Nurse didn’t hide it — an X-ray was ordered.Bouton PenseBet

Bad timing as the playoff fight tightens

Philadelphia’s medical team wants all the results before setting a treatment plan. The club also said there won’t be any other health updates until after the next two games. Maxey won’t travel to Cleveland on Monday and won’t suit up Tuesday against Memphis.

This is the worst possible moment. Sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference before Sunday’s action, the Sixers have only a one-and-a-half-game cushion over the Hawks right behind them. Lose Maxey and you lose your top offensive threat. A two-time All-Star, he’s averaging 29 points this season — fourth in the NBA scoring charts. And moments before getting hurt in Atlanta he was carrying the team with 31 points.
